OPENING REFLECTION
Thanks to John Cleghorn of Caldwell Presbyterian for these thoughts on hearing Angela Davis speak here in Charlotte:
Civil rights activist Angela Davis who has been on the front lines of "freedom work" for close to 6 decades came to Charlotte to speak at the gala for Freedom Fighting Missionaries. A packed room of 1,000-plus people sat upright as she began to talk. I expected a fiery speech about heightened efforts of resistance from this former Black Panther, who was wrongly jailed for a year and has since become a global figure. Instead, I heard calm, reasoned, resilient wisdom.
"I believe more in infinite hope than in finite disappointment," she said. "If you're involved in freedom work, you know you have to be involved for the long haul. Even though we haven't achieved all the change that we wanted, we have a much deeper understanding of what we're up against that has been gained by the freedom work we have done."
- Angela Davis

We know that all the changes at the federal level have a huge impact on the work of many of our partner groups. Here are some resources you may find useful:
NEWS and RESOURCES FROM NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NONPROFITS
After his January 20th inauguration, President Trump signed dozens of Executive Orders (EOs) covering a broad range of issues, including diversity, equity, and inclusion programs; government grants and contracts; civic engagement; immigration; and certain nonprofit subsectors. Some of the EOs won’t take effect immediately, and many are expected to be immediately challenged in court. This chart outlines some of the EOs that may affect nonprofits directly or indirectly.
NCN has compiled some initial steps that nonprofits can engage in to conduct a risk assessment as the Administration targets federal grants and contracts for termination. While the full steps that should be taken - and the rules that apply - will be specific to your grant, contract, organization, and the specific federal agency that provided the funding, the checklist will provide initial steps your organization can take and decisions you should consider.
GOVERNMENT POLICY UPDATES from Grant Station
GrantStation is closely monitoring recent federal actions and their impact on the nonprofit sector. This article tracks ongoing developments, providing links to source materials. We will update the article at least once a week, and in cases of significant developments, we will provide updates as quickly as possible.

They have some similar resources though many can only be accessed through membership. Their resources include NC focused pieces as well.

Health | Resiliency in Communities After Stress and Trauma (ReCAST II), 704-534-3238
ReCAST II and the Office of Violence Prevention have an exciting new program to announce that will support youth who are experiencing mental health challenges. We are bringing services to a larger group through TalkSPACE which has partnered with RECAST to offer additional resources for youths in need of counseling. This is not for those who have experienced significant trauma. TalkSpace for teens - allows youths to get additional support. Through the website they can get access to resources to learn about anxiety, depression and more and they can meet virtually or via text with a clinician 1x/month.
They are also partnering with CMS around Sources for Strength which is a suicide prevention program which allows youth to teach their peers. It has expanded to include violence prevention, mental health and wellness and healthy relationships among other. ReCAST is helping expand this program across multiple schools. We would love some partners to provide supplies or to go into the schools. We are also hoping to reach parents to help them understand these resources. There is a recording that can be shared from the training.

No Backpack Day was founded on February 12, 2012, born from a simple yet profound idea by a young 8 year-old student, Mongai Fankam. Disturbed by the challenges faced by children in rural Cameroon who had to carry their school supplies without backpacks, Mongai inspired her school in Charlotte, NorthCarolina, to experience a day without backpacks. This initiative quickly turned into a global movement, growing to involve over 40 schools and helping distribute over 100,000 backpacks to children across continents from Angola to Zimbabwe, including local efforts in North Carolina.
Join us on Saturday April 26th for our Fundraising Gala: A Night Full of Purpose | No Back Pack Day. Starting at 6:30 at the Nascar Hall of Fame, this will be an evening of impact, inspiration, and giving back. Featured speakers will include Dr. Auma Obama, Kenyan activist, Melissa Mahtani, CBS News journalist and Dr. Jess Awasung, leadership coach and education advocate. Adults only please! Tickets are $150. We hope to see you there, where we gather to support a cause that changes lives—one backpack at a time.

The Redress Movement is a newly formed nonprofit organization that empowers communities across the U.S. to take direct action to redress racial segregation. We work to repair the harm caused by intentional policies that segregate communities by educating, mobilizing, shifting the narrative, and winning redress victories. Our starting point is housing justice, but our goal is to dismantle all that divides us and heal our nation by facing the facts of history.
We work in deep partnership with local communities, and we do our work by educating, mobilizing, shifting the narrative, and winning Redress Victories.
We're looking for people who want to organize multi-racial, locally rooted community efforts to document the history and impact of segregation and win specific and significant repair.
Take the pledge to join Redress Neighbors who are working together to desegregate their communities across the country.
