OPENING REFLECTION

Different Yet United

We come from many places—along different paths, bringing different truths. We come with different histories and different realities,And yet we come together as one people—with faith that we can use our differences to heal ourselves, and each other,to bring wholeness to a fractured world. We come, seeking to find community,to find acceptance of who we are.

In this place we may find others who are much like us,and others who are much different.May our [gathering] remind us that we area people taught by different stories, with many voicesbut alwaysone people, workingfor a world where love creates justice, and justice gives birth to peace.

1. MECKMIN UPDATES

SUPPORTING MECKMIN SO WE CONTINUE THESE MEETINGS

THANKS SO MUCH TO RECAST for sponsoring 5 upcoming newsletters! It will be a true win-win – great publicity for them and great financial support for MeckMIN!

"Although I am relatively new to the work of MeckMIN, it has already been an invaluable resource for me as [my organization] endeavors to connect with others who hope to strengthen the well-being of Mecklenburg neighborhoods and communities. Among the greatest challenges in our county are the inefficiencies and miscommunication that result from the silos that exist . . .  the biweekly MeckMIN Zoom meetings have introduced me to new partners, new initiatives, and useful information. After meeting with me and taking time to understand our mission, LeDayne has also provided personal introductions to important allies in my work. In coalition work, relationships are key, and MeckMIN is a strong advocate for relationships grounded in shared values."

We were so heartened to get this great feedback above from a nonprofit leader who's just recently started attending these meetings.

MANY of you have shared similar reflections -- these meetings have given you solid information, new connections and partnerships, funding leads, volunteers, and more.

If these meetings are useful to you, please help us continue to offer them.

We are delighted to offer these meetings as a service to the community AND it takes a lot of staff time to make them possible SO we need solid financial support to make them happen.

The good news is that your financial support will also support YOUR work. Here's how:

If you become an affiliate member, you can publicize your work as often as you like throughout the year through our e-newsletter, website, Facebook and Instagram. You'll also get recognition of your membership on MeckMIN's website.Depending on your budget, affiliate memberships are as little as $100 a year and give you access to share the good work you are doing all year long. It's a true win-win! To become an affiliate member, use this link.

As an addition or alternative, you can also sponsor a Faith, Community and Nonprofit Leader newsletter for $100. As a newsletter sponsor, you will be thanked in the newsletter as a sponsor, have your logo featured, and be able to share an announcement as the featured article. To sign up for a specific date, use this link.

As an addition or alternative, your organization can also sponsor a general MeckMIN newsletter for $200. We have a reach of almost 4,000 people and a 53% open rate. To sign up for a specific date, use this link.

URGENT

Marsha Hirsch, Executive Director | marsha.hirsch@carolinarefugee.org | (704) 535-8803

CRRA focuses on those people who are refugees.  This means people who have fled their country and are registered with the UN as refugees and then are considered as such by the US State Dept.

Once the State Dept receives the file there is extended vetting and interviewing and then that person is approved or denied refugee status. Once approved, they are referred to one of the 10 agencies that help refugees acclimate to American society, make connections, and find a path to citizenship.

The initial process is 90 days during which kids are enrolled in schools, housing is secured, short term benefits are acquired, cultural education is offered, ESL is offered and more. Agencies like CRRA work to get the refugees jobs and help them become self-sufficient. HHS also provides funding from the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) with a budget assigned by Congress. They are authorized to provide support for up to 5 years. That support includes legal services and more.  After 5 years, refugees are eligible for naturalization.

There are usually approx. 70-80K people per year arriving through this process. In January, an executive order was signed to deny entry to all refugees from any country worldwide. There are court challenges to this order.  In the meantime, the refugees who are already here and in the process of integrating into the US are in a hold pattern.  There has been a work stoppage so any arrivals in the past 90 days cannot receive support and the agencies who work with them will not be reimbursed for their work.  The influx of refugees who arrived in December are not being supported, nor is the agency work on their behalf. The stoppage of federal funds jeopardizes both the clients support and the staff capabilities.  There is additional concern that ORR funding will be permanently frozen which would jeopardize services for the folks already here beyond their 90 days.

CRRA was receiving 700 people annually. Two other authorized agencies are here as well. Medical funds are at stake as well as other supports that lead to naturalization. CRRA has created a PDF explainer - SEE BELOW

If you would like Martha to come to your congregation or agency to talk about these issues, please reach out.

Other current immigration issues:

The refugee program is just ONE form of immigration being impacted by recent Executive Orders. Many people, programs and organizations are being impacted. Below you’ll find links to information compiled by various faith communities as they seek to share accurate information and suggest ways for people of faith to respond.

To help our communities stay informed and prepared, we’ve developed comprehensive Know Your Rights (KYR) resources and explainers in multiple languages and on a range of topics, including:

  • What to do if you’re arrested or detained by immigration enforcement

  • Safely protesting as an immigrant

  • How employers can prepare if ICE comes to their business

Check out this new webpage for an updated list of resources, advocacy actions, and ways to connect with Episcopal Migration Ministries.

Please let us know what you and your community need at this moment. We know that many changes and many potential changes are impacting many people, including our local faith communities. MeckMIN wants to do what we can to support and empower you and your members – PLEASE reach out and let us know what you need most right now.

HOLY RESISTANCE RETREAT – Charlotte Spirituality Center

In addition the Charlotte Spirituality Center, a training center for spiritual direction, is offering a retreat on Feb 22 for "Holy Resistance.”  Ellen Reich, the retreat leader, says:

This retreat will be a spacious, small group experience of nurturing, grounding, and connecting with others. In these days of rapid-fire changes, strengthening our roots - that which provides steadiness and nourishment - enables us to choose wisely and stand strong.

MECK COUNTY UPDATES

EMERGENCY SHELTER SURVEY

Dan Glaser-Reich, MPS, AEM | daniel.GlaserReich@charlottenc.gov | (704) 432-1168,  (704) 497-3325 Emergency Management Coordinator, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management,

Emergency Management assists residents experiencing an emergency or unstable housing situation by partnering with non-profit community partners to help. You may hear about two types of urgent sheltering needs:

Emergency Shelter: this describes a housing need after a relatively small event like an apartment fire

Disaster Relief: this describes community-wide crises like post Hurricane Helene.

The County is seeking to partner with congregations and other institutions and explore whether these facilities can be used for Emergency Shelter.  Any congregation that opts in would be able to refuse a specific request that comes to them in the future if Emergency Shelter cannot be offered at that time. By talking with Dan and agreeing to provide shelter you are really just agreeing to be on the list of organizations that are called and asked whether they can provide help in the wake of an event.

The purpose of this survey is to hear from faith communities what they are already doing in the homeless services or funding space and to learn about their level of understanding of the Continuum of Care.

The Age Friendly Mecklenburg Plan lays out a plan for creating a Mecklenburg County that is friendly towards elders aging in place and in the ways that are meaningful for them. WAYFINDERS MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITY (Wayfinders was formerly Bruce Irons Camp)

Lisa Stewart | Mentor Coordinator | lstewart@wayfindersnc.org

Wayfinders mission is to ignite students’ potential by expanding their confidence, connections, and horizons. They have three main programs: summer camps, year-round enrichment programs, and mentor relationships for self-motivated, under-resourced students.

There are three ways to support their work:

Event Support

  • Summer Expo for 7th-12th grade Scholars (February 20)

  • Mountain Camp Orientation (March 20)

  • Camp Kickoff Party (May 18)

  • Senior Graduation Celebration (May 29)

  • Back to School Bash (August 17th)

  • Happy Camper Night (September 20)

  • Career Panels

  • In-Kind Drives

In Kind Support:

  • Spring - Ensure scholars have an equitable camp experience: water bottles, beach towels, sunscreen, bug spray, swim goggles, etc.

  • Summer - Help scholars thrive in school: backpacks, school supplies, etc.

  • Fall - Support our Blue Hornets Soccer Team: cleats, shin guards, water bottles, etc.

Mentorship:

  • Mentors commit to a minimum of 5 years, starting in the scholar’s fourth grade year.

  •  Mentors build a supportive, long-term relationship with the scholar, guiding them through their academic and personal development.

Mentorship is a key component of the Wayfinders experience. Wayfinders pairs each new 4th grade scholar with an adult mentor who provides year-round support and encouragement to the scholar, assists with outfitting the scholar for camp, and, if able, drives the scholar (and possibly other scholars) to and/or from camp if needed.

Wayfinders mentors collectively volunteer more than 4,000 hours per year and commit to a minimum of 5 years as mentors. We hope you will consider becoming a Wayfinders mentor:

Leslie Leitner, leslie@aplacetoliveagain.org, Community Engagement Associate

The mission of Supportive Housing Communities is to provide affordable housing to alleviate homelessness and human suffering. About 60% of their funding comes from Federal funding so the freeze has jeopardized their work. You can find a link to reach out to your representative and ask that they restore funding.  https://endhomelessness.org/actions/act-now-federal-homelessness-funding-still-at-risk/

KEEP CHARLOTTE BEAUTIFUL LITTER STUDY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

The study spans four sampling periods: August 2024, November 2024, February 2025, and April 2025. PRAYER FOR LEADERS

“I’d love to say that maybe all the hard times are behind you but we both know that’s not how this thing works. So I will say this: I hope your experience of being hurt sharpens your awareness of small kindnesses and little mercies, rather than obstructing them. I hope that love, when offered, feels all the more precious and worthy of cherishing because your heart has known it’s opposite.

I’m sorry for whatever ugliness you’ve had to endure . . . But may the ugliness allow the beauty to be seen MORE clearly and not less. It’s not an answer to why life hurts, just an answer to how we get through it without the hurt winning.”

– Nadia Bolz-Weber
