HIGH-LEVEL STATUS UPDATES

1. North Carolina Emergency Management is working to find warehouses in WNC and transporting offerings people have brought to different donation sites across North Carolina. (There are also needs for warehouses in CLT)

2. “Please do not self-deploy resources or supply logistics unless you are attached to an existing NCVOAD organization. We must secure routes for responders and critical partner assets needed for response and recovery efforts. There is a high likelihood that your team(s) will be turned away at various checkpoints.” NC BEOC.

3. The State Emergency Response Team highlights the importance of trusted information sources. NCEM officials are cautioning the public about false Helene reports and misinformation being shared on social media, and has

published a resource on facts vs. rumors.

RESOURCES

LEGAL AID OF NORTH CAROLINA (LANC)

Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is asking for individuals to share any legal needs they are seeing in the communities affected by Helene by calling LANC's Hotline at 1 866-219-LANC 5262 or visit https://legalaidnc.org/tropical-storm-

helene-disaster-assistance/.

If someone is missing a child related to this disaster or any other incident, they need to call 9-1-1 and then 1-800-THE-LOST to receive assistance from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

-  Residents can get in touch with loved ones by calling 2-1-1 or visiting unitedwaync.org to add them to search and rescue efforts.

-  People can receive free services like cutting fallen trees, tarping roofs and mold mitigation with the help of Crisis Cleanup by calling 844-965-1386. The hotline is open through October 11 and can connect people with volunteers from local relief organizations, community groups and the faith-based community who may be able to assist.

-  Residents can visit: ncdps.gov/helene to get information and additional assistance.

FEMA

As always, our website, https://www.fema.gov/disaster/4827 is a regularly updated source of verified information about the disaster and our Rumor Response page is a helpful way to dispel some of the false information that is out there. Please feel free to share those sites and encourage registration for affected individuals!

We invite you into a space for soulful introspection, deep listening, and courageous action. Each stop uplifts local leaders, artists, and advocates who catalyze hope. You will leave with the tools needed to lead with love and courage in your daily life.

At the heart of every event, Valarie and fellow artists tell stories of how their ancestors survived seemingly apocalyptic times. Together, we explore how each of us can walk the path of love, healing, and justice. Featuring raag-based kirtan by celebrated Sikh woman artist Jasvir Kaur and renowned trumpeter and artist Sonny Singh performing from his new album Sage Warrior, accompanied by Qais Essar.

HEALTHY MECK SURVEY

Julie Alexander, RN, MSN | 704-355-0628

Project & Program Coordinator, Healthy Meck Division of Community & Social Impact, Department of Community Health Atrium Health

-working on healthy People healthy Carolinas

-a lot of disparity in North Meck despite the image that that section of the county is all wealthy

-Reach out to Julie Alexander for further details  julie.alexander@atriumhealth.org

Healthy Meck is a coalition that exists to serve the community by promoting healthy living for better health outcomes for all residents of Mecklenburg County. It's initial funding is through a grant from The Duke Endowment's Healthy People Healthy Carolinas initiative, and its work is starting in North Mecklenburg, an area with significant disparities and inadequate connection with many county resources. Coalition members include representatives of organizations and communities throughout the county.

The coalition's initial focus areas are food and nutrition, information access, and community support and its workgroups are in the information gathering phase of action planning. A series of community conversations in five partner neighborhoods highlighted several growth opportunities. Among other things, neighbors identified gaps in awareness about available community resources and how to navigate them. Seniors and members of the Latino community expressed particular gaps in information access.

You can support the work of the Healthy Meck in several ways:

  • If you are part of a service organization that serves North Mecklenburg, please complete our communication survey: https://forms.office.com/r/zxrwZhGndS

  • If you are part of an organization that supports food and nutrition services in Mecklenburg County, please complete our Hurricane Helene impact survey: https://forms.office.com/r/qfhSLkY54j

  • Connect us with others who have interest or expertise in our focus areas. Please reach out to Julie Alexander, Project & Program Coordinator, at julie.alexander@atriumhealth.org

  • Connect us with leaders of faith communities. Our neighbors are enthusiastic about partnering with communities of faith, and we are eager to get to know them and explore opportunities for collaboration.

ID INFORMTION FOR NATURALIZED CITIZENS

Jenny McKenney | jenny@voteriders.org

Misinformation about voting and our democracy continues to spread ahead of November's election. First, and most importantly, there are, and have been, laws and processes in place to ensure only eligible U.S. born and naturalized citizens vote. Amid unfounded claims of 'non-citizen voting', it's important to know what naturalized citizens can do to protect themselves from being wrongfully removed from voter rolls.

DMV data is one of the sources Boards of Election use to verify that registered voters are US citizens. Voters who obtained their ID or driver's license before they were naturalized should contact the DMV to ensure their records reflect their updated citizenship status. Voters may be able to update this by calling the DMV, but if they need to go in-person, we can assist with transportation or requests for an appointment. We can typically schedule appointments within a couple of weeks.

-If you have recently been naturalized since  notify and update your newly acquired status to the DMV

OTHER VOTER INFO:

-Exception Form available for those who lost their ID’s in this recent hurricane

Per Jennifer Roberts: They can also request an absentee ballot wherever they are if they have had to flee to a different county from where they live usually. The ballot can come to their new temporary address

Here is where you can order voter ID info cards for free in English and Spanish: https://www.voteriders.org/cards/

For information specific to voting in Mecklenburg County, visit the Board of Elections’s site: Vote.MeckNC.gov

The site includes information about early voting and Election Day voting, checking that your registration is up to date, photo ID requirements, sample ballots, and more.

For anyone who does not have an accepted photo ID, the Board of Elections can print a free voter photo ID. Information at Vote.MeckNC.gov.

Emergency measures voted on unanimously by the State Board for 13 western counties most impacted by Hurricane Helene can be viewed here. These measures include flexibility for the local county boards to increase access for voters because many already approved voting sites have been destroyed or are no longer accessible. There is also a whole section of the state BOE website dedicated to the response to Helene: https://www.ncsbe.gov/voting/upcoming-election/helene-recovery-and-voting

Some of the changes include the following:

  • Facilitate in-person early voting by allowing county boards of elections to modify their approved early voting sites, days, and hours through a bipartisan, majority vote.

  • Allow county boards to modify Election Day polling places by bipartisan, majority vote.

  • Allow county boards – by bipartisan, majority vote – to set up their board of elections office to permit any voter in the county to vote at that site, in the event voters are unable to get to their Election Day precinct voting site or are unsure of their voting location. Some county offices may also serve as an early voting site, which allows any voter of the county to vote during the early voting period.

BLESSING

To all of those struggling, a blessing by Kate Bowler...

Blessed are you, faced with the impossible.

You who do not take your eyes away from what threatens to swallow you whole.

You who stare down reality, though your heart quickens.

You for whom action comes swiftly, as you chart the next step or bulldoze a new path yourself.

You know how to turn hope into action.

And blessed are you who, when you’ve come to the end of what is possible, find the courage to live there too.

Blessed are we, who are learning how to hope and how to let go.

When to act and when to stop.

Balancing the impossibility of so much love and so much to fear. Together.
